As an important part of our research and development, the CALM team often seek out and draw inspiration from lifestyle, sports and fashion photographers from across the globe. Whether it be for their choice of subject matter, their shoot locations, their use of light and colour or their personal overall style, we all have our favourites. As part of our CALM Captured feature, we asked members of the team to put forward photographers that have inspired them.

RICHARD JOHNSON

First to the spotlight is Richard Johnson, a Sports and Lifestyle Photographer based here in London but originally hailing from Cape Town.

Looking through Richard’s portfolio, we loved the use of colour and the emotive human aspect of the sports scenarios that he captures so perfectly. Every image uses the radiance of natural light to optimum effect, with each subject captured at the perfect time as the light hits them.

Richard is driven by a desire to create authentic and emotional images, regardless of the subject matter. Whether he is shooting athletes, models, complete strangers or close friends, he captures people with honesty and authenticity.

No stranger to working for big brands, he has worked with names such as Oakley, Adidas, Red Bull, Virgin Active, Sony, Hurley, O’Neill and RVCA and his photography has appeared in publications including Huck, Marie Claire, Surfer and Stab. Richard also regularly collaborates with individual sportsmen and for his personal projects, he often returns to his first passion, surfing.

We asked Richard a few questions...

Favourite shoot and why?

I’ve been fortunate to work on some fantastic briefs with great clients in my career so it’s hard to pick a single shoot. One that comes to mind is a personal project I did a couple of years ago shooting the Tour of Ara, a vintage, self-supported bicycle race in the arid Karoo of South Africa. We spent a week zig-zagging this remote but beautiful part of the country and I met some incredible people.

What would be your bucket list luxury sports / fashion brand to shoot and why?

I’ve been fortunate enough to have already worked for a number of brands that were on my bucket list. Having said that, there are so many amazing sports/fashion brands out there, established as well as interesting young emerging ones - my list is constantly growing! If I had to pick a single brand, I’d have to say I have huge admiration for Patagonia. It’s not just about the apparel, it’s their ethos and their environmental principles - they’re currently suing Donald Trump over his decision to shrink national parks.

Who would you say was a current sports style icon?

The ex-professional cyclist David Millar; stylish on and off the bike.

Stoke Newington and Clissold Park

Favourite location to shoot?

I love shooting in LA. The light out there is great plus they have In n Out burger!

I’d love to do a shoot in Cuba.
