The Escape Edit is our quarterly spotlight feature with an inspiring industry icon, revealing their ultimate escape destination, what to pack and their secret holiday rituals.

This month we introduce you to Petro Stofberg, co-founder of Wardrobe Icons, an online fashion platform that favours forever pieces over quick-fix fashion. Petro and cofounder Laura Fantacci share a weekly curation of expertly edited essentials, that are timeless, endlessly versatile and worth the investment.

We sat down to talk Winter Sun with Petro, as she escapes the cold English winter for warmer South African climes for Christmas:

Why is South Africa the place for you for Winter Sun?

I am South African, so this comes with a bit of bias, but I love the fact I can jump on a plane, 12 hours later step off and I have left winter and entered glorious summer sunshine. I love the food, wine, people and I think the beaches are some of the cleanest and most beautiful in the world.

What’s in your Carry On?

Herbivore Moon Fruit Night Treatment is a must on long haul flights, super hydrating but not heavy. Aurelia natural deodorant is also top of my list, it is the most effective clean beauty product and I love the smell. An oversize cashmere pashmina and Bamford Pillow Mist make an airplane seat feel a little more lux and Bumble and Bumble Prêt-à-Powder dry shampoo gives great root volume and is also much better for the environment.

1. Herbivore Moon Fruit Superfruit Night Treatment, 50ml £48.00, 2. Aurelia Botanical Cream Deodorant, 50g £18.00, 3. Bamford Silent Night Time Pillow Mist, 50ml £20.00, 4. Bumble and Bumble Prêt-à-Powder Dry Shampoo, 150ml £24.00

Best place to wake up?

Our country farm guesthouse, Bosjes, in Worcester on the Western Cape. It is in the Breede Valley and is an incredibly calm and peaceful spot. It feels like a home away from home, the food and wine is simple, but fantastic. It is set between two mountain ranges so the views are always mesmerising.

Favourite beach hang out?

Onrus beach near Hermanus in South Africa - I have been spending Christmas there for 30 years. It is very low key with bright white sand and the rolling, often freezing, Atlantic Ocean. Nowhere on this planet makes me happier.

Low-key lunch spot?

Betty Blue in Hermanus, they do the best shakes and salads, great for breakfast too. In the height of summer there is always a queue, but totally worth it.

What’s in your beach bag?

Soleil Toujours, a fantastic sun cream that I am yet to burn with and is reef safe. A few towels, a change of clothes for when the kids turn blue and a good beach read. I’ve just finished the Goldfinch. Laura, co-founder of Wardrobe Icons, is always recommending business books to me, but I prefer the escapism of fiction.

5. Cirrus, Luxury Beach Bag, Ice Grey/Navy, £350.00, 6. Haze, Beach Fouta, £65.00, 7. Solis, Sunscreen Bag, Ice Grey, £100.00

Favourite activity on the water?

I love open water swimming. I can spend hours in the water, even if it’s cold, especially if there are breath-taking waves.

8. Rogue, Rash Guard, Black, £130.00

Ultimate luxury indulgence while in town?

Art galleries. What If The World Gallery in Cape Town is my favourite and I have bought a few Michael Taylor pieces from them.

One place only locals know about?

I am no longer a local, so I don’t know all the secrets, but I am always checking in with friends in the know to learn where the best spots are and newest openings worth investigating. Not so much a secret, but The Test Kitchen is still my favourite restaurant in Cape Town, it has won many awards and worth booking ahead for.
